Caryn Nesmith is a dedicated leader in community relations and a passionate advocate for racial equity. With over two decades of experience in strategic communications, community engagement, and project management, Caryn has consistently used her skills to drive impactful change across diverse settings. As the Director of Community Relations at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, she has been instrumental in fostering collaboration between the university and the broader community.
In 2020, Caryn played a pivotal role in establishing the Campus-Community DEI Task Force, which led to the creation of the nationally recognized St. Petersburg Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Center. This initiative also launched the Racial Justice Fellows program, empowering future leaders to champion equity.
Her extensive background includes advising senior U.S. and foreign government officials on communication strategies for policy initiatives and leading multicultural teams. Through her work in various global contexts, Caryn has developed deep cultural competencies. Her expertise in navigating complex issues of race and inclusion is supported by numerous trainings, including Courageous Conversations About Race, a DEI in the Workplace certification, and participation in leadership and racial equity programs such as the Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Summer Institute and Kingian Nonviolence Certification Training.
